Taman Ayun Temple and Mengwi Information

Taman Ayun Temple is nestled in Mengwi 18 kilometers northwest of Denpasar, Bali. It was probably built in 1634, according to local history this temple was built by I Gusti Agung, the king of Mengwi. Mengwi is derived from the word Arya Menguri, who was the founder of the former capital of Mengwi. Taman Ayun means a beautiful garden in the word, which is suitable for everybody who so desire. It gives comfort and a happy life to all creatures especially to human beings. Taman means pool or flower garden and Ayun means suitable for everybody.

The character of this temple is genealogic, the temple of origin. Some decades later Taman Ayun was enlarged with three bigger courts and was provided with more shrines and pagoda. This enlargement engulfed the old temple, which is now inside the first court of the new one, the people of Mengwi to worship God and his manifestations, their divine ancestor, and the deities of mountains. The old temple is still used by descendents of the royal family of Mengwi for the sanctuary worshipping their royal ancestor.

Seen from the temple location which is surrounded by water, the Taman Ayun Temple might be connected with the legend of Rebut Amerta or Mandana Giri, the story of the Gods and Asuras (demon Gods) ocean of milk. Amerta is an eternal life. Another proof of what is the relief of Garuda having a cup of ambrosia while his back is being it by a demon. This relief is sculpture on the back wall of the throne like shrine in the middle of the inner court.
Between so many shrines and buildings is “paibon”, a building made of bricks, which has archeological value. The Paibon is used for the sanctuary of worshipping the divine ancestors of the people. The front face of this building is carved in relief among which is the split head of Kalahahu, the demon who helps the gods in their efforts to search for ambrosia.

How to get there
Ride a taxi is an option to visit this temple and can be arranged from any hotels on the southern part of Bali. But taxi service will cost a lot.
