Balinese Temples
(by: Administrator - on Jul 28, 2009 for city Bali)

Balinese Temple is perhaps the most important place and most significant part of the life of a Balinese person, traditionally this is certainly true and it remains true for the most part of the modern Balinese way of life. Balinese Temple offers the people of the village or in the case of a family temple, the family spiritual refuge and a sense of community where everything stops and the traditional ceremonies and activities are of prime importance. If you spend any amount of time travelling around Bali no doubt at some point you will be diverted away from a road where there is a large ceremony for either one of the many calendar celebrations or for a family event happening in the village. Even on a main road if there must be a ceremony everything else including the local businesses and traffic flow becomes of secondary importance. This is the beauty of Balinese culture, a culture where no ceremonies have been affected by commercial bodies and modern life has not watered down the rituals and instead the events transpire in full glory as they have for generations.

Of the millions of temples in Bali there are family temples (sanggah or Merajan) as well as the tens of thousands of Kahyangan tiga (three sanctuaries) which include the temple of origin, the village temple and the great meeting hall temple. These can be found in each village and are great for visiting for an intimate and cultural experience away from the crowds of tourists. Most of the famous temples of Bali which are often the largest, oldest and most interesting are the ‘Mother Temples’ which are located at highly sacred areas on the island either in the mountains or at the Sea. These are to please the good mountains spirits and energies and the evil sea spirits and energies which have a huge impact on the lives of the locals and the layouts of family compounds, temples and whole villages and towns.
.
Balinese Temples contains anything from two shrines to courtyards of dozens of shrines and in some temples there will be over 100. in any temple the inner most courtyard is reserved for the most holy of rituals and shrines all lining up with the mountains and there will be a central area where the gods gather during the rituals. You will always see the high pointed roof and the thatched earthenware roof which honor the two most important factors of Balinese Temples and way of Life, Dewi Sri, Goddess of rice, harvest and prosperity and Rambut Sedana, the god of wealth. There is also the tall multi tiered roof which may have as many as 11 tiers and is a Javanese influence from the ancient Hindu times honouring a god or a certain ancestor. With many ceremonies surrounding these different aspects which vary from temple to temple and with most temples happy to let you look around, it is well worth the insight into the traditional life and culture of Bali by visiting on of Balinese Temples
