Balinese villages
(by: Administrator - on Jul 27, 2009 for city Bali)

Balinese Villages are incredibly interesting places to visit, there are so many to choose from and each have their own history, cultures and purposes as well as offering something to the island of Bali, Balinese Villages give people an identity which is extremely important in the Balinese way of life and society. Most Balinese people will live in their village until they marry into another village; once this happens one of the couple will no longer be a part of their mother village and instead will be greeted into the village as a new and respected member. As village life and remaining with your family are the two most important things to most people in Bali, the Balinese Village is hotbed of culture, friendliness and traditional beauty. Balinese people are proud and will rejoice in your interest and wanting to see and learn about their village and to gain a cultural and social slant on the island of Bali it is essential that you visit at least one Balinese village when on the island of Bali.

Balinese villages are social centres as well as being religiously and economically important. Even those who do not live in their village will return regularly for all types of occasions. Every Balinese has a three stage or core temple which will located and orientated closely with the centre of the village. There will be a temple of origin which will be located nearest the mountains where the safest spirits are as apposed to the seaward side of the village which is associated with more dangerous spirits. The Balinese use the standard compass points but also refer to directions in terms of upstream and downstream or towards the mountains or towards the sea which will be different all around the island. Between these two main temples you will find the residential area known as Banjars, these are effectively neighborhoods consisting of one or two road with a number of secondary roads and alleys leading off. These Banjars are controlled by the local Banjar or council who are similar to a neighborhood watch and have a community centre known also as the Banjar.

The Family compound must also adhere to a number of traditional rules and spiritual protocol such as having a strong wall symbolizing protection and often a wall just behind the door as it is thought that the spirits are not able to turn around corners and look straight ahead. Nothing can really be seen from outside but inside there will be several buildings each of which will have a use and once you know the basics you will be able to spot each area as if you were an expert. The family temple will be located in the mountain-facing side of the compound and also to this side of the temple is the room or building where the grandparents live under the greatest spiritual protection. To the west is where the Children usually sleep and the seaward facing area is reserved for functional purposes such as the kitchen and the keeping of livestock and possibly a bathroom.
