East Lombok

The East of Lombok is one of the most beautiful areas of this incredible island offering rural and cultural areas as well as great beaches and a taste of the traditional undeveloped lifestyle and scenery of Lombok. Lombok offers plenty to see from the tobacco plantations exporting Virginia Tobacco to the eastern sides of the mountainous areas where you will find the Sembalun Lawang and what is left of a caldera as well as Mt Rinjani, the largest volcanic peak of the island of Lombok. With this incredible landscape and the culture of the Sasak people, you will be able to enjoy not only the coconut groves, beaches, rainforests and villages but also waterfalls and other sights. The local handicrafts at Koto Raja (Royal city) are incredible and famous for their bamboo products, when walking in the area and around the markets it is amazing how diverse this material is and also the creativity of the people when using bamboo. Pringgasela is another area which should be seen particularly to see the traditional weaving which even within Indonesia is particularly beautiful; the Sasak weaving has to be among the best in the country.

Once seeing these different areas you might wish to take a trip slightly inland to the waterfalls of Otak Kokok and Gading & Jeruk Manis Waterfall which is located around 40km east of Materam and offers pools and shrines around this water fall which is believed to cure many illnesses from diseases to baldness. Other important areas around this part of East Lombok include Tete Batu located right on the outskirts of the Mt Rinjani with a combination of natural springs, views of Mount Rinjani which are nothing short of incredible as well as the cultural views of the entire area which are characteristic of East Lombok. In Selong you will find the main administrative area of East Lombok which is the ideal place to stop on the way Labuhan Haji and Kaliantan as well as anywhere on the east coast. At Selong you will be able to see the traditional culture merging and incorporating modern international living and growth.

There is so much to see in East Lombok which has so much to offer such as the unbelievable white sand beaches of Kaliantan where there are plenty of tourist facilities and some quiet areas as well as all of the water sports facilities and beach facilities that you could possibly require. In addition to this, Kaliantan hosts the Bau Nyale festival each year which is a spectacular event. Senanti offers East Lombok’s carving and craftwork which has been kept in the tradition of the past generations and around this area you will find plenty of hot water springs and forests to explore.
