Manado in North Sulawesi
(by: Administrator - on Jun 27, 2009 for country Manado)
Formally known as Celebes, Sulawesi is the petal like island of many peninsulas located in the north of the Indonesian archipelago. Sulawesi has a growing tourism industry that in many cases is helping the local people and has by no means reached a stage where the tourist presence has started to alter the scenery or cultures. Sulawesi is the third largest island in Indonesia and is a massive 172,000 square kilometers. The main sources of tourism apart from the island outstanding beauty and cultures are the incredible diving around the entire island and particularly the northern regions around the Manado and the Benosa National Park where the worlds best muck diving is situated, and visiting the jungles and seeing the wildlife on the land such as the orangutans who are commonly found in the south of the island.

There are many places to stay around the northern islands although they are spread around the different islands meaning that really, where ever you choose you will be in a peaceful and tranquil environment and all of these resorts seem to be located right on the beachfront with incredible views. Most of these resorts are of a fair standard and have pools, bars and restaurants of high standards overlooking the beach. These resorts almost invariably are connecting to the diving scene although many people stay purely for the location and do not dabble in what is usually a very professional and yet easy going diving scene.

The culture of Sulawesi is as diverse as any other island in Indonesia with people such as the Toraja who live in the mountains, the friendly and welcoming people of the Makassarese in the south and also the many different cultures that have immigrated to the island from other Indonesian islands, Malaysia, Europe and Japan throughout history.

The most discussed wildlife of the north of Sulawesi is the marine life of the Bunaken national park and around the northern islands of the shore of the mainland. You can see all sorts of large marine life as well as fish and coral life under the water including many unusual and spectacular creatures that are hard to spot anywhere else in the world. Most of the land and waters are protected in this area and the people who live in North Sulawesi are divided into four main indigenous people, the Minahasa, Bolaang Mongondow, Gorontalo and the Sangir-Talaud.

Flights in and out of North Sulawesi are common and easier than ever to negotiate and if you are interesting traveling in this area for diving or for it's beauty then there are many tour companies offering many different kinds of tours that usually include flight, transfers, meals and over night stays meaning you can simply concentrate of the area without a worry or stress in your mind.
