Bali Surf Spots
(by: Administrator - on Jun 23, 2009 for city Bali)

This is a concise account of the Bali Surf Spots and what everybody who will be surfing in Bali needs to know. First of all it is worth noting that typically in the dry season the swell is far larger, more frequent and of a longer period. The dry season has a consistent trade wind from the south east providing offshore winds all day on the west coast from Uluwatu up to Legian. In the wet season the swell is less frequent and smaller with lighter winds from the west making the east coast the choice in terms of clean waves. In terms of surf spots around Bali the Bukit (hill) peninsula offers some of the best waves in the world from Uluwatu which is the swells first stop after Antarctica and will always have the largest waves of the day, flat Uluwatu or Ulu as it is commonly known is as rare as hen teeth and in a good swell it will hold 12ft+ at the fables outside corner, on a usual day you will have peaks and the hollow race track.

All of these waves are left handers right the way up to the Kuta beach which extends to Legian and Seminyak where you will find some right hand beach breaks, the other exception is ‘Airport Rights’ which is one of the many aptly named Bali surf Spots. From Ulu heading north you will come to Padang Padang which only breaks properly in 4ft+ swell offering an easy take off into a barrel section from hell, once your out you can fade into the inside section which is can be made but is can close down depending on the swell direction. From the same spot you can paddle to Impossible’s which is a long wave with a few take off spots and seemingly impossible sections. Along from here is the perfect left hand barrel vending machine known around the world as Bingin where a tiny take off sport is shared between a crowded pack of surfers. Next you have dreamlands which has two deeper peaks and an inside beach break and around the corner again you will find Balangan which is another left which suffers from sectioning in smaller swells. After this you will find the airport waves and Kuta reef which require a short boat ride to reach or in the case of Kuta reef a possible long paddle, gone are the days of jumping in off the runway.

Other spots include the left hand Malibu wave known as Medewi which is a long journey from Kuta and a mellow wave over a rocky point and a laidback jungle like atmosphere surrounding it. Canngu is a wedgey sandbar and a left and right reef, there is a large crowd surrounding this area and due to a few pros and surf video producers living in villas nearby, there are often pros appearing as well as a number of keen locals and many others.
