Bali Art Festival was first started at 20 June 1979. It was held by the idea of Prof Ida Bagus Mantra, Governor of Bali at that time. He wanted to summarize cultures of Bali including dances, musical plays, art, woodcarving, stone sculpting and engraving, and also contemporary art from any different part of Bali. In that time, although Balinese had already done many cultural activities at their own village, this Art Festival was still interested to watch until now. They also could learn many others Balinese culture from different area and interact each other to together developing the culture.

The location was chosen for this festival was Cultural Park (Taman Budaya) located at suburb of Denpasar. The building design shows a disinterment, preservation and development of art and culture. The Cultural Park was able to accommodate many activities inside.

Years by years the Bali Art Festival has been succeeded inviting people from all around Bali promoting their culture to others. Nowadays, the performers are not only Balinese but also come from many other provinces and cities around Indonesia. The festival itself now becomes not only as tourism object, but also an icon of tourism of Bali.

Bali Art Festival usually starts in June to July. This year are the 29th times this festival. The president of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudoyono opened the Bali Art Festival on 16 June. Although many critics told that this year the festival has failed, but still, Bali Art Festival has to be held every year to develop and to introduce the culture of Bali and Indonesia to other people and foreign tourist. But if the Government want to publish Bali Art Festival internationally to the world, they have to evaluate this festival completely. The shows are good, but they have to care about the cleanness of Festival Environment and The healthiness of food which sold around the festival. The Government also have to update the activities and information of the festival and also have to make bigger publication than before.

The Bali Art Festival intends to promoting Bali tourism industry and introducing the Balinese arts and cultures worldwide. This will educate other people to understand about the traditional cultures and performances.
