Bali was particularly hard hit during the nationwide purge of Communists in 1965.More than 40,000 people were killed, and entire villages were destroyed. The island was part of a massive transmigration project in the late 1970s to relieve overcrowding. Bali is popular to most of the westerners and is one of the famous tourist destination.
